Our previous article covered how a balanced diet could save a person’s life so long as it is best suited to their lifestyle. Continuing on that point, people often need to tailor their diet depending on their different pastimes as well. One pastime that could be seen as unhealthy is online gaming, probably because of the sedentary lifestyle and how much time is spent sitting in front of a screen. Gamers often play for many hours at a time to try and win big prizes. For example, in eSports, The 2019 Fortnite World Cup Finals featured a prize pool of $30.4 million.

In online poker – Phil Ivey won the 2021 WPT Heads Up Championship and $400,000 as the prize money. Can you imagine how long those players had to compete while sitting in their seats to get that prize? Even where there is no prize at stake, online gaming is competitive and consuming the right foods can give you an edge.

Here are some tips that can help keep you at peak state.

  1. Berries

Aside from being delicious and sweet, these little fruits are packed with vitamin C, folic acid, and antioxidants. Whether its blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries, they have disease-fighting nutrients and can help protect you from cancer, heart disease, and dementia, and boost your immune system. You’ll be at your monitor for hours on a Fortnite map, and it can be easy to lose concentration. However, eating berries with a meal or as a fruit shake, can help provide a short-term memory boost so that you’ll remember every spawn location around the map.

  1. Nuts and seeds

Another easy and convenient way to level-up your game play is to eat nuts and seeds regularly. Nuts and seeds contain many brain-boosting nutrients, including vitamin E, healthy fats, and plant compounds. Some online games are about memory and perception – for instance, memorizing the poker hand rankings, or the different tactical tells your opponents have so you’ll know what to do next. Your perception needs to be finely tuned when stalking other players until the right moment in PUBG: Battlegrounds. Just like berries, nuts and seeds can be added to your meals or eaten as a quick snack while taking a short break.

  1. Whole grains

Known as the powerhouse of energy, whole grains are a great way to feel full and satisfied while gaming. They are rich in B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin, which enable the body to use carbohydrates as energy. Plus, thiamine is an essential micronutrient, which means it is not naturally made in the body; thus, the only way to get it is to eat (or drink) it. You’ll need all the energy you can get, especially if you’re digitally running up and down the basketball court while playing in the NBA 2K League. Regularly eating whole grains is a great way to maintain a healthy body weight and generate a lot of energy to keep your endurance up through every competition.

  1. Fish

Fish is one of the best foods for online gamers as it’s a low-fat, high-quality source of protein. It’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin B2 and is rich in calcium and phosphorus. Plus, it’s a great source of minerals, such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium. These are all crucial dietary elements that can help keep the mind focused, alert and ready for competition. Whether on the felt, court or in a battlefield, fish is a wonderful food to add to any gamer’s diet.

You may be sitting all day competing online, but don’t fret! As long as you are getting the proper nutrition you need, you will be able to achieve your peak state and nutritional goals. Eat right, feel right, and win the fight!
